The Margaret River region (also a town of the same name) is three hours’ drive from Perth and stretches roughly 100 kilometres, from Busselton in the north to Augusta in the south. There are more than 200 vineyards and 187 wineries dotted about the place.
The region produces just three per cent of Australia’s overall wine production, but more than 20 per cent of Australia’s premium wine. Wine here isn’t just good – it’s excellent. The region is world-renowned for high-definition chardonnay and complex, multilayered cabernet sauvignon, though many varieties flourish in the moderate Mediterranean-ish climate.
Alongside renowned labels (and in-house restaurants) such as Cullen, Vasse Felix and Leeuwin Estate, a growing number of new-wave winemakers such as Si Vintners, Dormilona, Sam Vinciullo, Tripe Iscariot and Las Vino are helping draw up blueprints for the region’s future. Only a few of this crowd have cellar doors yet, so look out for their wines in the region’s pubs and bottle shops.
